Davis on Strike King's Buzzbait
Editor's Note: Mark Davis, 38, of Mount Ida, Arkansas, who won the BASS Masters Classic in 1995 and the Angler-of-the-Year title in 1995, 1998 and 2001, never has had a career outside the fishing industry. Davis is ranked third by www.BassFan.com for bass-fishing expertise.
Question: Can you recall another time Strike King really helped out your fishing?
Davis: I was in New Bern, North Carolina. On the first day of the Angler-of-the-Year tournament, I was catching fish on a variety of lures, mostly with spinner baits. These fish suddenly got hard to catch. I went to a buzzbait, and I got a couple of strikes but missed them. I only had a couple of fish in the livewell and about the last hour and a half, I switched to the little small 1/8-ounce Strike King buzzbait with a small trailer hook on the back.
When I went to that 1/8-ounce Buzzbait it was lights-out. It's got the blade, it squeaks, it squeals, and it throws great. I fish it on 15-pound-test line and even 20-pound-test line. You wouldn't think that little 1/8-ounce Strike King buzzbait throws great, but you can run it over that grass. That little small size was what those fish wanted, and it worked the rest of the tournament. I had a pretty good finish, and went on to win Angler of the Year that year. That little bait saved me.
