Mark Rose's Tips for Professional and Recreational Fishing

Picking The Right Equipment

Editor's Note: Up-and-coming professional fisherman Mark Rose, 31, of Marion, Arkansas, is a member of the Strike King Pro Staff, has competed professionally since 1999 and has had several top-20 and top-10 finishes in bass tournaments.

Question: Do you believe in starting a novice off fishing with really-expensive, nice equipment or just basic stuff?

Rose: Beginners don't have to start off with expensive equipment as long as they fish with quality equipment. They need to use reels with three to four ball bearings in them. They don't have to spend $200 to get a durable reel. They don't need the fancy features, they just need a reel that will last and not tear up on them.

Question: What would you tell a woman or a child or someone who wants to learn how to bass fish, but they don't have anyone who can teach them in their local area. How should they go about learning?

Rose: I'd try to get them to read fishing magazines and watch instructional videos. They'll get the best learning experience out of videos because they are actually going to have people showing them how to fish. Too, they shouldn't hesitate to ask someone to take them fishing. I think a lot of times people may feel intimidated by professional anglers. They are in awe because you are doing something that they would love to do. But, we love to teach people how to fish along the way.
