Denny Brauer on Fishing for Bass
Denny Brauer's Unusual Tactics
Editor's Note: Denny Brauer of Camdenton, Missouri, has had 13 BASS career wins, and has won both the BASS Masters Classic and the FLW Angler-of-the-Year title.
Question: Give me a weird tactic that has helped you place in tournaments.
Brauer: I've discovered an unusual use for the Flip-N-Tube that I’ve designed as a tube to flip with and to pitch with, as well as to fish with in heavy cover. I’ve discovered that you can take it and rig it like a floating worm. It has terrific action on top when you jerk it in an erratic motion. Actually, it ended up having a higher catch ratio per strike than the solid-plastic baits because it doesn’t wad up on the lure as fast.
Question: Under what conditions do you use this tactic?
Brauer: It seems to work best during the post-spawn, when the water temperature gets 65 degrees or warmer. It can work effectively around schooling fish, smallmouth bass or largemouth bass.
Question: Can you give me a specific example of a time when that tactic helped you win or place in a tournament?
Brauer: No, I really can't.
