Davis On 3X Soft Plastics
Editor's Note: Thirty-eight-year-old Mark Davis, of Mount Ida, Arkansas, won the BASS Masters Classic in 1995, the Angler-of-the-Year title in 1995, 1998 and 2001, and is ranked third by www.bassfan.com for bass-fishing expertise.
Question: What’s your second favorite Strike King lure?
Davis: Second in line is the Strike King 3X Soft Plastics. I like them all, but my favorite is the 3X rubber-tailed worm. The reason I like all of the 3X Soft Plastics is because they are so soft and simply have so much action that bass like them. Fish get to see a lot of different stuff, like worms and crankbaits. Adding more action is the key to success.
Of course, it’s great that these lures are tough. You can catch a lot of fish on each lure that you put on it. If I catch 15 to 20 bass on a 3X Ribbon Tail Worm, I’ll only catch one or two on a standard soft plastic. Really, for me, the action is what makes me throw these lures. I could use any worm. As a professional fisherman, if I have a worm I think bass will bite, if I can catch one fish or 30 on it, does it matter? I want that bite. I like this lure because of the action.
Question: What is significant about the action of the 3X rubber-tailed worm?
Davis: It moves more. Because it is so soft and so flexible, with every twitch of the rod, you get movement throughout the entire bait. You don’t have to do very much to it. Just barely crawling it on the bottom will cause that whole worm to undulate.
