Chad Brauer's Unique Fishing Techniques

Chad Brauer's Odd Tournament Tactics

Editor's Note: Thirty-year-old Chad Brauer of Osage Beach, Missouri, doesn't know what life without bass fishing would be like. He grew up in the shadow of his father, professional bass fisherman Denny Brauer. But Chad has begun to cast his own shadow in the world of bass fishing. He is one of the most-respected young fishermen on the tournament circuit trail and is definitely part of the future of bass fishing.

Question: Tell me about the highlights in your bass-fishing career.

Brauer: I don't have very many highlights in my career since this will be only my seventh year of fishing. I've fished in the BASS Masters Classic, I've won one event in B.A.S.S., and I've competed in the MegaBucks finals.

Question: Do you have any odd tactics you use to fish for bass, and can you elaborate on them?

Brauer: I use an unusual method for approaching cover. I fish in many places that get a lot of pressure, such as the Lake of the Ozarks and the Potomac River. More than 150 guys may fish that lake every day, and 20 of them may fish the same bank every day. The fish get conditioned to the boat traffic and the fishing techniques. So when I run into situations like that, rather than putting my boat in the deeper water and fishing it from the bank outward, I get my boat up right by the shore and fish from the deep water to the shallow water. I'll do the same things with docks.

Many people will keep their boats out in front of them and cast up toward the shore and work their way back. I'll do the opposite. I'll get my boat up by the shore and fish the backside where a lot of people won't put their boats. I'll try to fish for bass that may be conditioned to baits coming from one way. I'll give them a different presentation and maybe catch some fish that some other guys are missing in those situations.
