When To Change Your Tactics
Editor's Note: Mark Davis of Mount Ida, Arkansas, is a three-time BASS Angler-of-the-Year winner and a Bass Master's Classic champion.
Question: How important do you think it is to occasionally make subtle differences or change your tactics?
Davis: Well it is very important to change on occasion, but it is a no-no in my book to constantly change up your tactics. I think changing lures too frequently is one of the biggest mistakes that fishermen make.
Once you locate the fish, and you know the fish are within an area, I think it can be very important to make changes both in your retrieve and in your presentation and color. While you are searching for bass, use the lure in which you have the most confidence to find the fish.
One of the biggest mistakes folks make is constantly changing lures. If you change to some dumb lure that you shouldn't use, and you do happen to get in a good area, you won't get a bite. You will miss the fish you may have caught with your original bait.
Question: What about changing colors?
Davis: I'm not as worried about the colors. There are times when you need to use red crankbaits because the bass won't bite chartreuse. I have my favorite colors, and I get hung up on colors just like everyone does. I think the right lure does the right thing. If it is a crankbait, it runs the right depth. If it is a spinner bait, it is the right size that runs the right depth. If it is a worm, it is the right size and so forth.
