Entry 42-4
Mark Davis
Training Conditions
Editor's Note: Mark Davis of Mount Ida, Arkansas, is a three-time BASS Angler-of-the-Year winner and a Bass Master's Classic champion.
Question: How does someone go about learning to fish. Is it through experience or are there five different basic conditions that you must train for?
Davis: I think it is important for novice fishermen to not try to learn all of the tactics and baits at the same time. Pick one that you are comfortable with. Learn with that one. Then add to that one as time goes along.
Question: How important is being familiar with your gear?
Davis: It is very important. It all goes back to that question about your equipment and keeping it up and ready to go along with your boat. You not only need to fill the boat full of gas and oil, but you need to charge the batteries and have all the right tackle. You need a first aid kit in the boat. And make sure your fire extinguisher is good, your life jackets are up to snuff, you have a good rain suit and that you have everything else you possibly could need.
You know your time is precious whether you are a professional fisherman or whether you are a working man with only Saturday to spend on the lake. So that extra time for preparation boat wise can really save the day on the water.
