When Strike King Saved the Day for George Cochran
The Tri-Wing Buzz King
Editor's Note: George Cochran of Hot Springs, Arkansas, a longtime member of Strike King's Pro Fishing Team, has won the BASS Masters Classic twice and has qualified for this World Series of bass fishing numerous times. Cochran has proven himself as one of the best shallow-water anglers in the nation. Many fishermen consider Cochran the master of finding overlooked places to fish and using under-utilized tactics to catch bass. We'll find out from Cochran about when Strike King has saved the day for him.
Question: What do you do to catch big tournament-winning bass?
Answer: I like to fish with Strike King's Tri-Wing Buzz King. The real secret to catching a lot of big bass on this buzzbait is the weather. I've found when you have a sprinkling rain or even a light rain with no wind, this bait can be deadly on bass. You really can catch a lot of big bass on this lure early in the morning by fishing riprap near deep water. I like to parallel the riprap and fish close to the rocks just at first light with this buzzbait. I catch a lot of really nice bass using this tactic.
I always keep one of the Tri-Wing Buzz Kings tied on a rod when I'm tournament fishing. Anytime I see shad activity around cover, I want to be able to pick up that rod and cast the Buzz King to that school of shad around that cover. I also keep this bait tied on a rod so I can grab it quickly and cast it when I see bass busting the surface. When bass are on top, I make sure I'm fishing a trailer hook on the buzzbait because many times the bass will strike short. Then that trailer hook will allow me to catch bass I won't catch if I'm not using the trailer hook.
