Mark Rose's Favorite Strike King Bait
Editor's Note: Thirty-one-year-old Mark Rose of Marion, Arkansas, has fished professionally for some 4 years. In the past, he’s worked as a district executive for the Boy Scouts of America's national office. He went pro with Strike King several years ago. Although he's never won a tournament, he proves his consistency by always finishing near the top.
Question: What is your favorite Strike King bait?
Rose: Strike King's 3X floating worm is actually one of my favorite baits when I'm looking for a limit and also in the spring. I have several different ways I prefer to rig this bait. I take a 3/16 ball lead head and do several things with it. I can rig wacky style, or Texas rig it and fish it around brush. It's dynamite for spotted bass and smallmouth because of its finesse presentation.
I really like the 3X because of its buoyancy. Also, its action in the water is unlike any other floating worm. Most other floating worms are hard plastic. But the 3X technology is really awesome because of the way it pulsates in the water, making it really effective in clear water. Strike King also has some very loud colors of 3X worms that are effective in stained water. It's the most-versatile worm out there.
Question: When did it help you catch more bass?
Rose: At Pickwick during a BASS Open, I caught fish on a deep-diving crankbait. On the second day of competition, the fish actually suspended over the cover that I was about to fish the crankbait.
Since the water was pretty clear, I decided to Carolina rig it and put a 6-foot leader on it. When you’ve got a 6-foot leader on 3X technology, it'll float -- a 6-foot rise over your weight. Since the fish were suspended, the 3X technology worked out perfectly. The best thing about the 3X is its buoyancy when you Carolina rig it.
