Entry 49-5

Mark Rose

The Centipede

Editor's Note: Thirty-one-year-old Mark Rose of Marion, Arkansas, has fished professionally for some 4 years. In the past, he’s worked as a district executive for the Boy Scouts of America's national office. He went pro with Strike King several years ago. Although he's never won a tournament, he proves his consistency by always finishing near the top.

Question: Tell me about Strike King's Centipede.

Rose: The Centipede has a lot of the same characteristics as the 3X floating worm does. Whenever I downsize, I like to use the Centipede with a Carolina rig. I find that's the most-effective way of fishing this lure. This lure really shines if you're fishing for spotted bass or smallmouth bass.

The 3X Centipede really shines whenever the floating worm or the 3X lizard are too big. Even though the Centipede has a small profile, it will still float. Most of the time you are not throwing that big of a hook anyway. When you use the Centipede, you are really trying to downsize your line and your hook, to help the effectiveness of that bait.

The Centipede on a Carolina rig is very productive in clear water for catching smallmouth and spotted bass. The Centipede really paid off at Table Rock, Beaver Lake and Bull Shoals for me. I Carolina- rigged the Centipede and ambushed the springtime bass that held around heavy cover and rocks in these lakes.
