Strike King Lures Are For Saltwater Too
How to Zulu Redfish
Editor's Note: Shaw Grigsby of Gainesville, Florida has made more than $1 million dollars professionally fishing on just the B.A.S.S. circuit. He has a TV show and is one of the Strike King pros. Although Grigsby earns most of his living from freshwater fishing, he is an avid saltwater fisherman. This week he will tell us the joy that he has found in fishing Strike King lures in saltwater.
Question: Are there any other fish that you can use the Zulu to catch?
Grigsby: Of course, the Zulu is probably the most-versatile freshwater and saltwater bait that Strike King makes. It is extremely deadly on redfish. When you are fishing for redfish don't put the lead strips on the hook. You want the bait to float.
Question: How do you use the Zulu differently to fish for redfish?
Grigsby: I'll still use a 6-1/2-foot rod, but I will be fishing the Zulu on oyster bars and grass beds and around some type of bank or edge. Redfish are very visual feeders. So, when the Zulu hits the surface, I'm going to twitch it lightly and give it plenty of darting action. Most of the time the redfish will see the Zulu and then attack it. Although redfish are big fish, they are sight feeders.
Unlike trout, the redfish doesn't like noisy bait. As a matter of fact, noise will spook redfish. This is one reason I like the Zulu. It can enter the water very quietly. It has a lot of flash and action. It will trigger redfish to bite. You have to remember when redfish come up into really shallow water, even the splash of the bait can spook them. But that little Zulu doesn't seem to intimidate them.
Another advantage to fishing the Zulu is that it is such a soft bait, it feels so natural in the redfish's mouth that once it inhales the bait, it will try to inhale the lure rather than spit it out. For this reason, you can set the hook as soon as the fish takes the bait.
