My Number-One Lure
Editor's Note: Shaw Grigsby of Gainesville, Florida, has qualified for his tenth Bassmaster Classic. Grigsby has won 8 B.A.S.S. tournaments since turning pro in 1984. Shaw also has 40 top-10 finishes and has won the gold medal for bass fishing in ESPN’s Great Outdoor Games.
Grigsby: I didn't do very well in the first tournament of the season on the Harris chain of lakes in Florida. I went to Okeechobee and fished the 3-3/8-inch Wild Thang Junior tube from Strike King. I was close to the fish but just didn't get the job done. The third tournament of the year, which was on Lake Seminole in Bainbridge, Georgia, I made the top five by flipping the Wild Thang Junior. I fished two colors, black neon and the green pumpkin. In heavy cover, I can work this bait easily, and it keeps a small compact profile. The legs and appenditures give it more of a crawfish look than just a straight tube that enters the water.
I flipped two or three heavy-matted hyacinth areas where I was able to catch a couple of nice bass. Using a big weight that penetrated the hyacinth, and hit the bottom, I would shake the lure around and then go to the next spot. Getting it through the hyacinths was the hard part. But once the Wild Thang Junior hit the bottom, all I had to do was pick my rod tip up a couple of times and then hit the next spot.
