Shaw Grigsby's Five Lures That Got Him To The Classic
3X Gets Hammered But Stands Up To Test
Editor's Note: Shaw Grigsby of Gainesville, Florida, has qualified for his tenth Bassmaster Classic. Grigsby has won 8 B.A.S.S. tournaments since turning pro in 1984. Shaw also has 40 top-10 finishes and has won the gold medal for bass fishing in ESPN’s Great Outdoor Games.
Grigsby: At Clear Lake in northern California, I ended up ninth. I primarily used the 3X Lizard. I was sight fishing and using a black neon and the new Spike-It spray that was developed just for the 3X plastic. I would spray the tail chartreuse. I would pitch the 3X Lizard into beds, look at the fish and work it slow to aggravate the fish. I also used the chartreuse pepper, which was a color that I could see easily.
The fish were hammering this bait. Once you stopped the movement, the weight would hold the head down, and the tail would float up. I guess this movement resembled a lizard trying to eat things, and the bass would hammer it as soon as it stopped moving. I only used the 3X about four or five times during the whole tournament because they were so tough.
