Mike Wurm - Lures That Got Me To The Classic

Strike King Pro-Model Spinner bait

Editor's Note: Mike Wurm, a 51-year-old angler from Hot Springs, Arkansas, first fished competitively in 1978 and began on the Bassmasters Circuit in 1992. He has one win and 11 top-10 finishes in his career. This year he qualified for his seventh Bassmasters Classic.

Wurm: Another lure that helped me reach the Classic this year would have to be the Strike King Pro-Model spinner bait. This lure is a mainstay in my arsenal. I can't think of any tournament I’ve fished in where I didn't have a Strike King spinner bait. Whether I count on it as my number-one lure or a lure that I use to catch a couple of bass to stay in the tournament doesn't matter. It’s still always tied on to one of my rods. I like to use the 3/8-ounce Pro-Model spinner bait. I use a No. 4 gold with willow-leaf blades and a No. 2 Colorado chartreuse-and-white with different trailers.

On the Harris chain of lakes in Florida, I finished in the top 10. My main lure was a Carolina-rigged 3X worm, but the 3/8-ounce Pro-Model spinner bait was the lure I caught the biggest and most fish. On the final day of the tournament, the spinner bait was the only thing on which I could catch any fish. The Pro-Model spinner bait proved itself by keeping me in the tournament when nothing else was working. Also, it's always good to have a spinner bait handy. So, when you run across a good spinner-bait spot you can stop and throw.
