Mark Rose On Fishing Specific Types Of Weather
Wind and Choppy Water: Negative or Positive?
Editor's Note: Thirty-one-year-old Mark Rose of Marion, Arkansas, fishes professionally, but in the past, he's worked as a district executive for the Boy Scouts of America's national office. This week Rose shares with us how he succeeds in situations where other fishermen are ready to pull in their rods.
Question: What do you do if boat traffic muddies-up your fishing area?
Rose: A lot of times, boat traffic is a situation beyond your control. During the summer, pleasure boats are on every body of water, and the fish are accustomed to that. Boat traffic is like the rain. It affects the fishermen more than the fish. Boat traffic is actually an opportunity because it will stir the fish and the bait up, causing the fish to become more aggressive. Before you give up, think the situation through, and a lot of times you'll find out that boat traffic is a positive fishing condition.
Question: How does wind affect your day on the water?
Rose: In the summertime, wind is a great thing. However, in the fall and the winter, wind is a situation through which you have to fight. In the summer, wind is positive because the water temperature is hot; the fish are lethargic and really in need of something to spark them. My grandad always said, "The wind is your friend." As I've gained more fishing experience, I've realized that in my grandfather's infinite wisdom, he is right. Wind is like the boat traffic. It gets the fish active and up against some type of cover. So, take two generations of advice. Wind is truly your friend.
