Meet Mr. Mike Wurm

Keeping Up With The Intensity

Editor's Note: Have you ever wondered who these men are who run up and down highways across the nation catching little green fish for money? What are their lives like? Why do they do participate in professional bass fishing? What do their families think about them being away from home so much? We want you to meet and get to know the Strike King Pros, both as some of the best bass fishermen in the nation and also to learn what they're really like. This week you'll get to know Mike Wurm up close and personal.

Wurm: One of the most-difficult aspects of bass fishing is staying focused on fishing and not letting your mind wander. If you're going to catch every fish that bites your baits, you have to stay focused on your line, your lure and your rod. As soon as you see and feel a fish take your bait, you've got to be ready to react to that strike instantly. When the bass are biting and you're catching them, staying focused is easy. But when you're not catching bass, your mind tends to wander. People who aren't focused on their fishing will start switching baits, changing locations and spending more time running their outboards than they do reeling on their rods. They'll also spend more time looking at their watches, instead of fishing hard and relentlessly until the absolute last minute. The best way to get your focus back is to catch a bass. Then you start thinking, "Okay, where was that bass positioned before it bit my bait? What did I do to make him bite the bait? What other places on the lake do I know of that have the same conditions as this area? Can I continue to pitch back to that same spot and catch even more bass in this same spot?"

Regaining your focus after you've caught a bass is easy. But when you don't catch a bass, getting back on track is hard. That's one reason I downsize to lures like the Bitsy Bug and the Micro-King spinner bait when I'm not catching bass. Catching a bass, any bass, regardless of size, helps me refocus my day, get my mind back on fishing and back in the competition. If you find yourself in a tournament or just out fishing for fun, and you're not catching any fish and begin losing your focus, downsize your lures, and start catching bass again. Even if the bass are little, you'll regain your focus and be able to fish hard the rest of the day.
