Meet Mark Rose

The Best of Fishing

Editor's Note: Mark Rose was an Executive Director for the Boy Scouts when the tournament-fishing bug bit him. Armed with the courage required to be a tournament fisherman, Rose left a safe and secure job to enter the uncertain world of professional fishing. Rose jumped out on the tournament circuit and has never looked back. This week, we’ll meet a young man with a vision and learn what his life is like, living his dream.

Question: What’s the best part of being a professional fisherman?

Rose: Hunting and fishing have always been a part of my life, and to be able to live the dream of being a professional tournament fisherman is really exciting and satisfying for me. Also, from my position as a professional fisherman, I’m in a place that I can teach young people how to deal with the struggles of life and how to catch more fish. Being a professional fisherman has given me the opportunity to give back the love and knowledge of the out of doors that I learned from my dad and my granddad, and that is really rewarding. I also like having attained a position in life that causes other people to look up to me so I can hopefully give them advice that will make their lives better and more rewarding.

Question: What is it like when you do well in a tournament?

Rose: When I have a really good tournament, I become very humble, while at the same time, excited and proud that I’m living the dream that I dreamed so many years ago as a youngster. I like the natural high that comes from doing well in a sport like fishing. Some folks rely on drugs or alcohol to produce a feeling of well-being and success; however, for me, being able to fish and live my dream every day and being able to do well in tournaments is the biggest high that I can get. I thrive on the natural high of being a tournament angler and of doing well in those tournaments. I don’t have to rely on any kind of artificial stimulants to make me feel good about who I am, what I’m doing, and how successful I am. Bass fishing delivers all that to me in bucketsful. I can’t imagine being in any other kind of work that could produce this much satisfaction and excitement all-day everyday.
