Chad Brauer’s Favorite Five Baits
Why I Like the Buzzbait and When I Fish It
Editor's Note: Chad Brauer of Osage Beach, Missouri, is only 31-years old but has been tournament fishing for 8 years. Married with two children, Brauer chooses for us this week his favorite baits and tells us why he enjoys fishing them.
Brauer: The buzzbait is one of those lures that just doesn't get a lot of respect. You don't read or hear about the buzzbait winning many tournaments. The reason is on most lakes the conditions don't favor a top-water bait all day long. However, the buzzbait is a lure that can put bass in your boat almost every morning from the post spawn to the winter. Almost every fisherman I know begins his fishing day right at first light with a buzzbait. You almost always can catch aggressive bass during that first hour or two of daylight each morning on a top-water lure.
My favorite top-water lure is the buzzbait. This is one of the first lures that I learned how to use after the jig. The advantage to fishing the buzzbait over other top-water lures is that the buzzbait allows you to cover a lot of water quickly. The buzzbait is easy to fish, and the best retrieve seems to be to cast it out and reel it in as fast as you can. This lure allows you to quickly and efficiently present a bait to the most bass possible and catch the most-aggressive bass the quickest during those first two hours of daylight than any other top-water lure will.
My favorite buzzbait is the Strike King Pro Buzz in the 1/4-ounce size. I fish this lure more than any other top-water bait. I believe that the smallest top-water bait you can fish that makes the most noise produces the most bass. The Strike King Pro Buzz in the 1/4-ounce size fits this niche for me. Now the 1/2-ounce buzzbait makes more noise and creates more disturbances on the surface of the water than the 1/4-ounce bait does. However, I know that the smaller size buzzbait produces more strikes than the bigger buzzbait does.
