Mike Wurm’s Take on Strike King’s Bass-Catching Lures
The Bait Built for Me
Editor's Note: Mike Wurm of Hot Springs, Arkansas, has fished professionally for 13 years and always finishes in the money.
Question: Mike, why do you like Strike King's Compact Premiere Pro-Model Spinner Bait?
Wurm: This spinner bait really fits my fishing style. At first glance, you may think this is just another spinner bait, but the attributes that make this spinner bait unique and different will definitely help you catch more bass. You have to look closely to see why this spinner bait is so much different from other spinner baits and to understand the fishing features that it can provide for you.
1) The head of this new spinner bait gives the appearance of being a 3/8 ounce spinner bait. However, this spinner bait comes in the 3/8 and 1/2 ounce size. This lure looks smaller than it actually is because more of the weight is distributed throughout the lure than you see in just the tip of the head. The weight of the lure makes it much more castable since much of the weight of the bait is hidden under the skirt so you don't actually see it.
In the past, one of the problems we discovered in fishing small spinner baits was that we couldn't cast them very far. Most fishermen know that you'll usually get more bites and catch more bass on a small spinner bait than you will on a large spinner bait. However, because of the size of the lure, and more importantly, the weight of the lure, in the past we haven't been able to cast small spinner baits as far as we can large spinner baits. But with the Compact Premiere Pro Model Spinner Bait, we now have the weight of a heavy spinner bait in the profile of a small spinner bait.
2) Another advantage that this little spinner bait provides is because of the weight's being hidden under the skirt, you now can cast much more accurately in the little pockets beside a blown-down log and the little pockets in the grass that you can't cast to as accurately with lighter-weight, small spinner baits. A 1/4-ounce spinner bait is much harder to control when you're casting than a heavier spinner bait. In the past, anglers had to choose between a big heavy spinner bait that they could cast accurately, but because of the weight, had to be fished much faster through pockets and holes, or a little spinner bait that they could fish slower through pockets and holes, but they couldn't cast it as accurately. So this new spinner bait meets a very serious fishing need that we haven't had a lure to meet in the past.
Recently, in the Lake Wheeler Southern Open Tournament, I finished 20th and caught all my bass on this little small spinner bait. I was fishing rip-rap banks and pencil grass banks. I could stay away from that shallow water and still make really long casts to cause the bass to bite with this little lure. After that tournament, I was really impressed with the advantages this little spinner bait gave me. I can promise you the new Strike King Compact Premiere Pro Model Spinner Bait has definitely become one of the main tools I keep in my bass-fishing arsenal.
