Denny Brauer And His Jigs

Why the Strike King Denny Brauer Chunk Trailer?

Editor's Note: Denny Brauer is a legend in bass-fishing circles and has won so many fishing titles that people are in awe of him and his fishing ability. If you had to pick one bait that defined Denny Brauer, that lure would be the Denny Brauer Strike King Pro Model Jig that he helped to develop. When times are tough, Brauer relies heavily on the jig to catch bass and win tournaments. But what makes Brauer so deadly as a jig fisherman, and what can he teach us so that we can learn to fish the jig better? We'll try to answer these questions this week.

Question: Denny, there are all kinds of jig trailers on the market today, including Ripple Tail Trailers, Pork Trailers, Plastic Trailers, Big Trailers and Little Trailers. So, why did you develop the Denny Brauer Chunk Jig Trailer, and why do you believe that this trailer is superior to all the other trailers on the market?

Brauer: I don't just believe that this trailer is superior to all on the market. There's no doubt in my mind that this new Strike King Denny Brauer Chunk is the best trailer a fisherman can buy. Each time I fish it, my belief and faith in this chunk trailer is confirmed. We designed this trailer specifically to be the best jig trailer on the market. Over the years, I've had the opportunity to fish a wide variety of jig trailers. I've learned what works best and what doesn't work when it comes to the features of a jig trailer.

With this new Strike King Denny Brauer Chunk, we have had the opportunity to eliminate all the negative features of a jig trailer and build into this bait all the best features that you can want in a jig trailer. For instance, if you have a bass bite one of the legs of a pork trailer, and the fish doesn't get the hook, you will lose that fish. If one of the tails of the pork trailer goes over the hook when the bass bites it, you're not going to get the penetration on the hook that you need in most cases to catch the bass. Another problem with pork is that in many cases, matching the exact color of the jig to the pork is extremely difficult and sometimes impossible. However, with plastic, you can get the color right, but you give up the action that the pork trailer has. So, when you're fishing pork or plastic, there are some trade-offs you have to make.

Too, pork doesn't tear up as easily as plastic. With the new 3X material, the Denny Brauer Chunk Trailer now has the toughness of pork, the colors of plastic and the action of pork. As a matter of fact, the 3X trailer has a unique action. It's also impregnated with salt and garlic to help the bass hold onto the jig longer once the fish gets the chunk into its mouth. If you've ever watched a crawfish that has been dropped in the water as it sinks toward the bottom, you'll see that the profile of the chunk is exactly the same as the profile of that crawfish falling from the surface to the bottom. This causes the bass to react to the jig quicker because it looks so much like a crawfish.

Question: How important is the salt and the garlic being impregnated in this chunk?

Brauer: I believe that the salt changes the 3X material and not only prevents it from being tacky to feel, but it also alters the very nature of the 3X material by giving the chunk a unique action. Because the 3X material is also heavily impregnated with garlic, you don't have to dip this tail in some type of fish attractant every time you fish it. Strike King and I have taken everything that I've learned over the years about what causes a bass to bite, hold onto and get hooked by a jig and built it into the Denny Brauer Chunk Trailer.
