Mr. Consistency And His Consistent Baits

Wurm Tells Us Why Three Is His Favorite Number

Editor's Note: Anyone can attempt to be a professional bass fisherman. Some anglers can bass fish on the professional circuit for a year or two until their money runs out or their patience and endurance takes flight, but one man consistently wins money and consistently fishes with the best of the best, Mike Wurm of Hot Springs, Arkansas. We asked Wurm what five baits this year had kept him competitive and in the money.

Wurm: Whenever I am fishing, I have a Strike King Series 3 crankbait tied on the line of one of my rods. I like the Series 3 crankbait because there's hardly any type of structure or cover that I can't fish it around. I use this lure with a wide variety of retrieves.

One of my favorite retrieves is a crash type of retrieve. Many times I can trigger strikes from bass that don't want to bite by crashing that Series 3 crankbait into some type of underwater cover, then pausing the bait and start cranking the bait again. When the bait crashes into some type of cover, the sound it makes when it hits the cover attracts the bass's attention. When the lure stops and appears to be dazed, the bass will attack. Or, if the bass is too far away to make an attack while the lure is still in the water, the bass will attack the bait as soon as the lure starts moving as if it's stunned. If the bass is still reluctant to bite but moves closer to the crankbait, and I can crash that crankbait into cover again, oftentimes the bass will attack the bait the second or even the third time I've crashed the lure into the cover.

Another place that the crankbait has really been good for me is when I am fishing thick cover or areas where you normally will fish a spinner bait, a jig or a tube. By fishing the Series 3 crankbait in areas where most other anglers won't fish a crankbait, I can often get bass to bite that haven't been biting the spinner bait, the jig or the tube. I believe that the Series 3 crankbait is one of the most-versatile lures on the market and a lure I depend on in almost every tournament I fish.
