Entry 112-4
Mr. Consistency And His Consistent Baits
Why the Tube Takes More Bass
Editor's Note: Anyone can attempt to be a professional bass fisherman. Some anglers can bass fish on the professional circuit for a year or two until their money runs out or their patience and endurance takes flight, but one man consistently wins money and consistently fishes with the best of the best, Mike Wurm of Hot Springs, Arkansas. We asked Wurm what five baits this year had kept him competitive and in the money.
Wurm: I never go fishing without a Strike King Denny Brauer flipping tube tied to the line of one of my rods. Anytime I am going to be fishing around bank structure, I use a flipping tube. I like the black neon tube, which has a red stripe on it. That tube bait gives a subtle presentation so it doesn't spook many bass. You have a wide variety of ways you can work the flipping tube. You can use it as fall bait, you can hop it up off the bottom, you can crawl it on the bottom, you can flip it, you can pitch it into heavy cover, or you can swim it through the mid-water. There have been plenty of times this past year if I hadn't been fishing a tube bait, I wouldn't have caught a fish. I never go fishing without a tube.
Another time that having a tube can really pay off for you is when a bass strikes and misses your lure. Many times you can throw a tube bait right back to that same bass, and the bass will eat that tube when it hits the water and starts to fall. The tube is one of the best second-chance baits I know of and that is the reason I'll never go fishing without a tube. Not only do I have it tied on a rod, but I have it tied on a rod I can quickly and easily reach. Many times you only have a few seconds to get another bait to a bass that has missed the bait you're originally fishing. You have to be able to grab the rod with the tube on it and quickly cast it right back to where you already have had a strike.
