Mr. Consistency And His Consistent Baits

What to Do When Fishing is Tough

Editor's Note: Anyone can attempt to be a professional bass fisherman. Some anglers can bass fish on the professional circuit for a year or two until their money runs out or their patience and endurance takes flight, but one man consistently wins money and consistently fishes with the best of the best, Mike Wurm of Hot Springs, Arkansas. We asked Wurm what five baits this year had kept him competitive and in the money.

Wurm: The best words I can use to describe this past season are cold weather, bad weather and lock-jawed bass. Without question, we had some of the worst-fishing conditions and bass to try and catch that we've had in many years. Many a morning this past tournament season I went out to compete and knew that the bass didn't want to bite. I knew that the only way I was going to catch those bass was to force feed them by trying to make them eat a bait when they didn't want to eat any bait.

On those kinds of days and under those conditions, the lure I depend on is the new Strike King Zero. I can throw that goofy-looking worm a mile on 17-pound-test line. When it hits the water and falls, it wiggles back and forth and loosens up those lock-jawed bass' lips. It's a very subtle technique and you have to be patient to fish this tactic, but if you watch your line and take your time, you can make a bass bite this bait, when it won't bite any other bait.
