Shaw Grigsby on How to Catch Bass in August and September
Having Fun in September
Editor's Note: Shaw Grigsby of Gainesville, Florida, a well-known professional angler, enjoys fishing all the Strike King baits, especially the spinnerbaits. He has a TV show titled "One More Cast" on the Outdoor Life Network (OLN). This week he will discuss the baits needed to reel in success during the hottest months of the year.
Grigsby: As we move into September, we need to remember that this is a transition time for bass. They are moving out of their summer pattern and into their fall pattern, and they are becoming more scattered. This is one of my favorite times to fish because I can take a Diamond Shad, go to the banks and just start burning that Diamond Shad down the banks. With the Diamond Shad, I can cover a lot of water to find and catch numbers of bass. I can fish fast and quick, and the bass that the lipless crankbait will attract will be really aggressive in wanting to feed. Fishing for aggressive bass is much more fun than fishing for bass you know don't really want to bite.
Start looking in the backs of pockets and coves this time of year because the shad will be moving to these pockets and coves and really schooling-up there. Late in the afternoon, get in your boat, and go all over the lake and look for schools of shad. Where you are seeing the shad is where you can expect to find the bass. September is not only an easy time to catch the bass, but it's an easy time to find the bass. There is really nothing more fun than seeing the shad, knowing the bass are where the shad are, and making those bass bite that Diamond Shad.
I have some of the best days of bass fishing, when I'm fishing the Diamond Shad in September. The reason this Diamond Shad can be so effective at this time and under these conditions is because the bait looks exactly like the shad on which the bass are feeding. If you find the shad, cast the Diamond Shad to them and reel the bait really quickly, you will catch bass. Every now and then, you will find some bass that want a slower presentation rather than a fast, burning presentation. But most of the time, reeling the Diamond Shad quickly will solicit the most strikes.
