Mike Wurm - How I Catch Bass This Month
The Jig - A Must-Have Fall Bait
Editor's Note: Mike Wurm, a 51-year-old professional bass fisherman and a member of Strike King's Pro Fishing Team from Hot Springs, Arkansas, ranks No. 21 on the Top 150 Trail. He's had eight top-10 tournament finishes and has competed in five Bassmaster Classics.
Wurm: As the weather gets colder this month, the bass will depend more on the crawfish as a food source. For this reason, I believe the jig is an absolute necessity for successful bass fishing in November. My favorite types of cover to fish the jig around are rocks, logs and stumps - places where crawfish like to live. Therefore bass will be looking for crawfish in these areas and will take a bait like the jig, since it's such a great crawfish imitator.
I'll cast to every piece of cover I can find when I'm fishing the jig. I'll usually be fishing with 15- to 17-pound-test line. When I get into heavy cover, I'll even fish 20-pound-test line. I use the Denny Brauer 3X Chunk behind the trailer, because the chunk saves me time. I don't have to replace this chunk nearly as often as I do soft-plastic trailers because the chunk is made of 3X material. This trailer not only catches a lot of fish for you, but it doesn't dry out when it's laying in the boat. This soft and pliable chunk gives the jig plenty of action. I especially like to put the chunk on the jigs with the bleeding red hooks. My favorite colors for fall are black, brown and amber.
Remember when you're fishing the jig that the water doesn't have to be but 6-inches deep to hold a good bass. So, don't forget to fish the jig in really-shallow water cover. Cast, flip or pitch the jig any place you think a bass may be at this time of the year, and expect a strike.
