Shaw Grigsby - How to Catch Bass in December
The Chunks and the Jigs for December
Editor's Note: Shaw Grigsby of Gainesville, Florida, a well-known professional angler, enjoys fishing all the Strike King baits, especially the spinnerbaits. He has a TV show titled "One More Cast" on the Outdoor Life Network (OLN). This week he will discuss what baits to use in December, depending on the area of the country in which you're fishing.
Grigsby: The new Strike King Bleading Bait jigs are incredible. They have very, very-sharp hooks as well as little red accents in their skirts. The red hook and the red weed guard really make this jig phenomenal. But what excites me so much about the Strike King jig now is that during the winter months when you really need to downsize your jig, Strike King has come out with two new trailers that will allow you to better match a small jig with a small trailer.
The Junior Chunk and the Bitsy Chunk will match up perfectly with some of the smaller jigs and give you a more dainty-looking jig than the bigger, heavier jigs with which most fisherman fish. These smaller trailers are also made of 3X material, which gives the jig trailer a lot more action and really causes it to come alive. When the jig hits the bottom, that trailer lifts up the jig and gives the bait a lot more action. I guess the variety of jigs and especially jig trailers that Strike King has come out with for this year area big part of why I'm so excited about
fishing for bass in December.
If I'm fishing off-color water that may be a little warm, I may want to use a bigger, heavier Strike King jig with a new Denny Brauer chunk on the back. However, if I'm fishing in more northern climates in clear water where I want to downsize my jig and go to the Bitsy Bug, I now have a more-appropriate size trailer than what I've had in the past. The Bitsy Bug jig with the small trailers are going to be excellent when fishing on spinning tackle for smallmouth in December also. So, now you can match the air temperature to the water color and the water depth you want to fish and not only have a wider range of jigs in the new Bleeding Bait colors but also have a wider range of jig trailers to match your jigs.
Often when the weather's cold and the water's clear, small jigs and small trailers will produce many more big bass than big jigs and big trailers will. Therefore, when you're fishing this month, always take some of those little dainty baits with you. If you're tired of sitting next to the fire and dreaming about rods bent, drags stripping and bass dancing on their tails, try some of the new Bleeding Bait jigs with some of the smaller trailers on them. You may think Santa Claus has come to see you when you catch more and bigger bass this month than you've ever caught in December before.
