Mike Wurm on How to Catch Fish Now in the Fall
Crank Them Up
Editor’s Note: Mike Worm, a Strike King Pro since the mid-1990s says, “I can’t remember when I wasn’t a Strike King Pro.” Worm fishes the national professional bass circuits and conducts seminars at trade shows and sporting events throughout the year.
The crank bait bite is good now in the early fall and will continue to improve as the weather gets colder. Fishing creek channels with buzz baits will often provide some of the best fall fishing you can have. One of my favorite places to fish crank baits is on secondary points. I fish the main points first, but if I don’t get a bite, I’ll go to the secondary points. I start fishing the points with a large crankbait first. Then as the weather becomes colder, I move into the creeks and start fishing the smaller Series 3 crankbait from Strike King.
I like the Series 5 crankbait when I’m fishing main river points and in deep water. However, when I move into the creeks, I like a smaller crankbait like the Series 3. I’ll fish down the bank all the way to the back of the creek with the Series 3 bait. When I’m fishing the Series 5 crankbait out on the main river channel, I like the shad pattern crankbait or the chartreuse with a blue back. But when I go to the Series 3 crankbait and move into the creeks, I love the Fire Tiger, especially when the water is a little off-color. A crawfish-colored crankbait can be good also. My favorite place to fish crankbait is on chunk rock creek banks.
