Denny Brauer on November Bassing
How Brauer Fishes Spit-N-King This Month
Editor’s Note: Denny Brauer has been fishing in professional bass tournaments since 1980. A twelve-time winner in Bassmasters tournaments, Brauer was named Angler of the Year in 1987 and holds the money winnings record on the Bassmasters’ circuit. Brauer also won the FLW Tour Angler of the Year in 1998 and is the first angler to be featured on the Wheaties cereal box.
Question: How and where are you fishing Strike King’s Spit-N-King?
Brauer: There are two things to remember about fishing in November. If the shad are feeding on the surface, the bass will be in the pockets and coves. If you can’t find the shad feeding on the surface, look for the secondary points in the pockets. If you don’t get a bite, move to the next point. If you do get a bite, fish that secondary point a bit longer; you may catch two or three bass.
I like to run a pattern with the Spit-N-King. Sometimes I hit secondary points until I find the bass. Other times, I fish the Spit-N-King down chunky rock banks. Another key to pinpointing bass at this time of year is to look for bass in the same places you’ve found them in the spring. Go back to the same spots you’ve fished in spring and fish them now in November. Use your Spit-N-King, and you should be able to find bass in those same spots now.
Question: What kind of action do you give the Spit-N-King?
Brauer: I try to develop a cadence. I give the bait two or three pops and then let it sit still. Then I repeat the same steps over again. Be sure to pay attention as to when the strikes come. Try to determine if the strike comes when you’re popping or when you’re stopping the lure. If I get a strike when I pop it, I won’t stop the bait on the next cast. I’ll pop it all the way back to the boat. If the bass is taking the bait when it’s dead in the water, I’ll pop it three times and then let it sit longer than usual.
Question: What color Spit-N-King do you use?
Brauer: I like any of the shad colors. I particularly like the grey ghost color if I’m fishing for largemouth bass. If I’m fishing for smallmouth bass, I use brighter colors such as chartreuse with a blue back.
