A Lure is Born with Denny Brauer
The Marlin Bait
Editor’s Note: Have you ever wondered why lure companies come out with new lures each year? Well, Strike King’s professional fishing staff are some of the best fishermen in the world, and one of their jobs is to identify new trends in the marketplace. These pros work to determine which lures will catch bass better, to define fishing problems that can be solved with better lures and to identify new colors and patterns that appear to make bass bite. Most of these anglers are on the water at least 200 days out of the year. Thanks to their research, Strike King brings its consumers the latest and greatest fishing lures and tactics. This week you’ll see the thought processes that take place before a new lure is put on the market and learn how and why Strike King has become the leader in the lure industry.
Question: The King Kong resembles baits that offshore fishermen use to catch marlin. Do you think this bait is too big for most bass?
Brauer: Not really. If you’ve ever looked at a largemouth bass, you know that it has a large mouth and likes to eat large portions. Largemouths want to eat a meal that’s worthwhile in order to expend their energy. They’re not interested in a hors d’oeuvre, but prefer a t-bone steak. However, giant bass are lazy. Now, Strike King has given them that T-bone steak, thanks to the King Kong swim bait.
When I go to a lake, I want to catch the biggest bass that lake has to offer. The big swim bait is now big enough to make big bass bite. What’s important to remember is that every lure has a specific application, and this is true of the King Kong. You’ll be foolish to fish the King Kong in certain lakes simply because they don’t contain big bass. If you fish a body of water that contains big bass, then this lure gives the fish a new look. It gives you the chance to catch those big bass that may not hit smaller lures.
