The Ability of the King Kong

A Lure is Born with Denny BrauerEditor’s Note: Have you ever wondered why lure companies come out with new lures each year? Well, Strike King’s professional fishing staff are some of the best fishermen in the world, and one of their jobs is to identify new trends in the marketplace. These pros work to determine which lures will catch bass better, to define fishing problems that can be solved with better lures and to identify new colors and patterns that appear to make bass bite. Most of these anglers are on the water at least 200 days out of the year. Thanks to their research, Strike King brings its consumers the latest and greatest fishing lures and tactics. This week you’ll see the thought processes that take place before a new lure is put on the market and learn how and why Strike King has become the leader in the lure industry.

Question: We have talked about the King Kong’s ability to catch big bass. Will it also catch those limit-size bass that weigh only 1-1/2- to 2-pounds each?

Brauer: Yes, it will. However, that’s not what the lure has been designed to do. On the day I caught so many big bass in the California tournament, I caught a 12-1/2-inch bass on a 7-inch-long swim bait. When I changed locations, I only got four big bites, but those bass were four of the biggest ones caught in the tournament that day. The length limit on the lake in California was 12 inches. The smaller bass that I caught on the swim bait also added to my total weight for the tournament.

A Lure is Born with Denny BrauerThe answer is yes, you can catch smaller bass on the King Kong. But, are you going to catch many small fish on it? Probably not. Remember, this bait is designed to catch big bass, so if you’re fishing in waters that contain small bass, it won’t be as effective. We are all still learning how to use this lure. The average fisherman needs to keep in mind that the King Kong is designed to catch big bass. My best advice is to try this bait in places where big bass live.
