Fishing With Randy Dearman
The Deuce
Editor’s Note: Randy Dearman, an avid fishermen and professional angler from Onalaska, Texas, has fished professionally for 20 years. He works as part of Strike King’s Pro Fishing Team and has competed in seven Bassmasters Classics.
Question: Randy, what do you think about Strike King’s new double-bladed buzzbait the Deuce?
Dearman: The new double-bladed buzzbait is really unique and creates a lot of noise and splash on the surface. What makes the bait really different from other buzzbaits is how slowly you retrieve it, yet lures still keep the King Kong on top of the water and in the strike zone of the bass.
The Deuce is also weedless. You can cast it into a logjam and into some of the thickest grass you’ve ever seen, and when it comes through that thick cover, it won’t roll over on its side. Because it holds up straight, it does not get hung up as much as standard buzzbaits. I was really amazed at the amount of trash I could reel this bait through without getting hung-up. The bait appears to be unfoulable. When the bass attack, they can get the hooks.
Question: What is another advantage of the double-blade over the single-blade buzzbait?
Dearman: I think the real advantage is how slowly you can retrieve the bait. When fishing with single-bladed buzzbaits you have to reel fast to get the bait on top of the water and keep it there. With the double-bladed buzzbaits you can reel it twice as slowly because with both blades turning, the blades lift the bait much more than if only one blade turns.
Just because you can reel the Deuce in slowly doesn’t mean you can’t reel it fast. You can. Just like any other bait, having the advantage of being able to fish the double-bladed bait slowly, makes it a more unique buzzbait than any other bait on the market. The twin propeller gives the Deuce one more gear than other buzzbaits. Other buzzbaits have low, medium and high gears. The Deuce has super-low, low, medium and high gears, which means Strike King anglers have a new gear, or a new speed, with which to fish the buzzbait that they haven’t had in the past.
Question: On what pound test line are you fishing the Deuce?
Dearman: Either/or 17-pound-test or 20-pound-test line.
Question: What type of places, and what time of the year do you like to fish the buzzbait?
Dearman: I like to fish it during the pre-spawn, the summer and the fall. The only time I don’t fish the buzzbait is in the dead of winter. I think one of the best times to fish the buzzbait is during the early spring when no one else is throwing it.
In early March or late February, especially in the South, more than likely the bass haven’t seen a buzzbait in three or four months. So, the lure can be extremely deadly, especially on big pre-spawning bass, then. I really believe that bass get educated on lures. For a long time, the bass have been accustomed to seeing a single-spin buzzbait. The double-spin buzzbait has been on and off the market several different times. I believe the Deuce that Strike King has come out with this year is one of the most-unique double-spin buzzbaits to come to the fishing market. Since the bass haven’t seen it before, I believe they’ll more than likely hit it.
