Dr. Joe Tanner and the Fishers of Men Tournament

The Fellowship of Christian Anglers Society

The Fishers of Men TournamentEditor’s Note: This year Mossy Oak Fishing Line will be a state sponsor for the Fishers of Men tournaments. What is the Fishers of Men tournament trail? Why and how was it started? Why did Mossy Oak Fishing Line become involved? We interviewed Dr. Joe Tanner of Atlanta, Georgia, to learn more about this bass fishing tournament circuit.

Question: What has been some of the most-rewarding benefits about being associated with the Fellowship of Christian Anglers Society?

Tanner: I’ve really enjoyed seeing new fishermen who join the circuit get their lives straightened out. I’ve enjoyed seeing the fishermen bring their families to our Friday night meetings before the tournaments, and I’ve enjoyed seeing families fishing and competing together in a Christian atmosphere.

We’ve decided that it’s a good idea for husbands and wives, fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, and fathers and daughters to fish together. I enjoy seeing an angler catch a 7-pound bass that he or she never has caught before, and the excitement on the faces of our regional winners when they win a new Triton boats and motors.

The Fishers of Men TournamentQuestion: How many tournaments are conducted each year?

Tanner: Each division will have five tournaments. For instance, we have two different divisions, which are north and south. In Alabama we have four divisions, which are Alabama Northwest, Alabama Northeast, Alabama Central and Alabama South. Each division has five tournaments per year, including four regular tournaments and one qualifying tournament. If they win in their region, they go to the division tournament. If they win the division, their entry fee is paid for the national tournament. The top seven teams out of each division are qualified for the nationals. Our competitions are strictly team tournaments.
