Fishing with Mark Davis and Strike King’s New Lures
Part 2: The Double Wing ProBuzz Buzzbait
Editor’s Note: Mark Davis, of Mount Ida, Arkansas, ranked third by www.bassfan.com, has won Bassmaster Angler-of-the-Year titles in 1995, 1998 and 2001 and the 1995 Bassmasters Classic.
Question: Mark, what do you think about Strike King’s Double Wing ProBuzz Buzzbait?
Davis: There are so many good things you can say about this lure that I don’t know where to begin. When you look at this bait, it looks big and unnatural. To be honest, it looks gaudy. The only way you can really appreciate this lure is to fish with it. But let me tell you what I like about this double-propeller spin bait. It casts like a dream, as true and as straight as an arrow shot from a compound bow. When you cast it, it doesn’t glide or run off to one side or the other.
The bait also tracks true as you pull it through the water. So, you can make precision casts beside boat docks, and it’ll run right beside the dock. You can cast it beside shallow logs and run it right down the side of a log. You can cast it down little lanes in the grass, and it’ll run straight down that lane. Those tandem blades will run through lily pads, grass beds or any structure.
Another big advantage to this lure is that it’s weedless. When you try to reel a single-bladed buzzbait up and over a log, it will lay over on its side, and the main hook, the trailer hook and/or both hooks will hang-up in the wood. But that won’t happen when you’re fishing this tandem buzzbait from Strike King. It’ll run right over a log without the hooks ever touching the log. I like to fish it in all types of heavy cover where I usually won’t think about throwing a single-bladed buzzbait. But, once you test this double-bladed bait on different types of water and cover, you’ll be amazed at what you can come through, over, around and under with that lure.
I really believe that this new double-wing spin buzzbait will drastically change buzzbait fishing for all of us. I usually start fishing this buzzbait earlier in the spring than most people because it’ll start producing bass on top before other buzzbaits will. I think it’s one of the best new lures that Strike King has made in a some time.
