Fishing with Mark Davis and Strike King’s New Lures
Part 5: The Big Iguana
Editor’s Note: Mark Davis, of Mount Ida, Arkansas, ranked third by www.bassfan.com, has won Bassmaster Angler-of-the-Year titles in 1995, 1998 and 2001 and the 1995 Bassmasters Classic.
Question: What’s the Iguana?
Davis: I’ve always caught a lot of bass rigging a big lizard Texas style. But I can’t wait to go to a lake where I can fish the Iguana on a Carolina rig. I think most fishermen will be flipping, pitching and Texas-rigging the Iguana because it’s such a big bait you feel like you just should throw it in thick cover and hang-on. But I can tell you right now that if you’ll Carolina-rig that lizard, you’re really going to be surprised at how many bass you can catch. I believe this big lizard will catch more 3-pound-plus bass than you’ve caught in the past.
The best way to fish the Iguana on a Carolina rig is to use a 1-ounce lead and shorten your leader. You don’t want to fish a leader any longer than 2 or 3 feet. I think that the Iguana will produce big bass for the anglers who have the courage to fish it around deep stumps, on deep ledges and drop-offs and on the ends of points. I really believe that the Iguana will be the best, new, big soft-plastic lure to come to the fishing market this year or for years to come.
