Fishing Strike King’s Products with Mike Wurm

Part 5: The Deuce

Mike Wurm and The DueceEditor's Note: Mike Wurm of Hot Springs, Arkansas, has been a professional angler for 11 years. He fishes both the FLW and Bassmasters tournament and has won two Bassmasters tournaments.

Question: What other new Strike King bait are you using?

Wurm: The first thing I think of when I hear the word Deuce is twin carburetors on an automobile. Twin carburetors have always made a car run bigger than cars with single carburetors. The Deuce buzzbait is one that runs bigger and better than other buzzbaits. Buzzbaits have been around for a long time. Many anglers ask, “What can you do to make the buzzbait better?” Strike King's answer is, “Put two blades on the buzzbait instead of one.” Some anglers say, “So what? We’ve seen a double-bladed buzzbait before.” But, you’ve never seen a double-bladed buzzbait like the Deuce.

The Deuce has counter-rotating blades on the bait that cause it to jump on top of the water quickly; it also allows you to swim the buzzbait slowly. This new buzzbait sputters and splashes, attracts a lot of bass and stays in the bass's strike range longer than other buzzbaits. One of the things I’ve noticed about the Deuce is that when the bass attack this bait, they intend to kill it. The strikes are much more violent than we’ve seen on a single-bladed buzzbait.

Mike Wurm and The DueceI like the 1/4-ounce Deuce in cool water, and I like the 1/2-ounce Deuce in warm water. Fishing the Deuce is like throwing a garbage can lid out on the street. It’s going to make a lot of racket, cause a lot of attention and lure in bass from long distances. My favorite color is black. I think black is the color buzzbait that most anglers overlook. White, chartreuse, and chartreuse and white are anglers’ favorite colors for buzzbait.

What I do is take a black buzzbait and put a chartreuse Strike King tube on the back of it as a trailer, especially in brackish water. Many times, a black buzzbait will produce strikes when a white or a chartreuse buzzbait won’t. I like to start fishing the buzzbait when the water temperature is 55 degrees or warmer. I mainly like to fish it in flats and close to cover.
