Shaw Grigsby on Late Spring and Early Summer Fishing

Part 3: The Premier Plus

Strike King Premier Plus with Perfect SkirtEditor's Note: If you want to know how to catch bass on any day, you’ll always get the best information from the anglers who fish the most. Anglers who fish the most are professional anglers and guides. The second way that you learn the best information on how to catch bass on any day you go fishing is to obtain information from the anglers who make the most money. Strike King Pro, Shaw Grigsby, fits both of these criteria. He’s made over $1 million in tournament fishing and earns a good income from his TV show. This 48-year-old fisherman from Gainesville, Florida, fishes as much, if not more, than any angler I know. When he’s not fishing tournaments, he’s fishing for his TV show. We’ve asked him what the best tactics are to catch the most bass in June, and this week you’ll see his answers.

Question: What’s your third choice in lures and tactics this time of year?

Shaw GrigsbyGrigsby: I love to fish the spinner bait. The spinner bait is much like the Diamond Shad because there’s not a time of year when it’s inappropriate. My favorite spinner bait is a Strike King Premier Plus with a Perfect Skirt. This new skirt has plenty of flare and flash, and you can arrange the colors in the skirt the way you want. The skirt colors aren’t mixed-up like most spinner bait skirts. They’re layered with the darker colors on top, lighter colors in the middle and the lightest colors on the bottom to better imitate a baitfish.

Question: What size and color spinner bait, and what blade combination do you like?

Grigsby: My favorite color is gold. I like the gold blades and the gold skirt. Strike King also makes a blue-and-green flash spinner bait that is also extremely good, and I use it frequently. Day in and day out, I’m going to fish the gold spinner bait more often than I do any other lure. I also fish the gold and nickel blade in the same color spinner bait.

Question: Why do you like the Strike King’s new Perfect Skirt instead of a standard spinner blade skirt with a trailer?

Strike King Premier Plus with Perfect SkirtGrigsby: New spinner baits from Strike King have the highest-quality blades you can buy on spinner bait. They have sharp hooks, and the line tie is at a good angle to the point of the hook, to get maximum penetration when you strike the fish. The other critical advantage to the new Strike King spinner baits with the Perfect Skirt is that each lure comes with a trailer hook attached. I preach, “Trailer hook, trailer hook, trailer hook,” all the time for spinner bait fishing. Now, instead of having to buy a separate trailer hook and one of those rubber rings to hold it straight, these new spinner baits come out of the package with the trailer hook attached in the right place in the correct way.

Question: What kind of places are you fishing the spinner bait at this time of year?

Grigsby: I like docks, logs, lay-downs and grass. As the weather warms up, and the water gets hotter, I move to deep water and fish the spinner bait around drop-offs and ledges. The lake you fish will determine what type of cover is best to fish around.

If I’m fishing in Florida at this time of year, I like to throw spinner bait in and around hydrilla beds. If I go to Guntersville, Alabama, with its abundance of grass, the spinner bait will catch bass all day long. If I’m fishing in Texas where there’s a lot of trees, logs and brush in the water, I fish the spinner bait around wood.

If I’m fishing a lake that has rocky points, then that’s where I’ll be casting my spinner bait. I like to fish the spinner bait around shallow cover right now while the bass are still in shallow water. The reason I like to fish the spinner bait in shallow water at this time of year is because when I have a Strike King spinner bait tied on, I’m going to catch a bass.
