How I’ll Fish the 2007 Classic with Denny Brauer

Part 4: What Weather I’ll Pray For

Editor’s Note: Denny Brauer of Camdenton, Missouri, professional tournament bass fisherman, will make his 19th Classic appearance at the 2007 Bassmaster Classic. He won the 1998 Classic held on High Rock Lake in Greensboro, North Carolina, he fished the Lay Lake Classic in August that Jay Yelas won, and he’s fished several tournaments on Logan Martin Lake in Alabama.

Denny BrauerQuestion: What weather and water conditions will favor you to win the Classic?

Brauer: Obviously, I’d love to see one to two weeks of a warming trend where we have those big female bass moving up to shallow water to get ready to spawn, because as you know, I love to flip and pitch to that shallow water. I’d also like to see plenty of quality fish coming to that shallow water so I can fish to my strengths, beat the banks and fish the way I like to fish best. However, I’ll say that the odds on that happening aren’t really good.

I believe the water temperatures in Alabama will be 5- to 6-degrees colder this year than the water temperatures are during an average winter in Alabama, because of the weather patterns we’ve already seen in that area and from what I’m seeing on the weather map for the foreseeable future. I’ve been watching the 10-day forecasts almost every day for a month before the tournament, and the prospects for shorts and t-shirts aren’t looking really good. I’d really love to see a huge warming trend show up just before the Classic, but I’m betting it won’t happen.
