Shaw Grigsby on What Makes Strike King Lures Great

Shaw Grigsby'Editor’s Note: Fifty-one-year-old Shaw Grigsby of Gainesville, Florida, a longtime member of the Strike King team, has won over $2 million in tournament bass fishing. He’s fished professionally since 1984, and he’s the host of the “One More Cast” TV show on the Versus Channel. This week, we’ve asked Shaw to tell us what makes Strike King lures great.

Day 4: Computers and Bass Fishing

Strike King Strike ShadStrike King not only creates new and different lures in unique colors, the company also experiments with new materials to make these lures. The Strike Shad is a classic example of how a new material drastically can change a bait. Strike King created many custom baits this year, and the Strike Shad features a circuit-board lip like the circuit board you’ll find on a computer. The circuit board is light and thin, and it allows the crankbait to dive deeper more quickly and have a more-unique action than many other crankbaits.

These custom-shop crankbaits have better hooks, better line ties and better split rings than other crankbaits. They also have better paint jobs. The lure designers at Strike King have custom-designed these wood baits to allow them to dive down 4-to 6-feet deep and produce a lot of action.

This is an extremely-productive cold-water bait with a really-tight wobble that can be very deadly in the spring and in the fall, when you want a tight-wobbling bait. Strike King BuzzbaitThese lures are unique because of their extremely-thin, very-strong circuit-board lips. With most crankbaits, to produce a really-strong lip, you must have a thick piece of plastic. However, by using the circuit boards, Strike King has completely changed the lip design, the action and the weight of this crankbait.

It’s so light and strong that it gives the lure a unique wobble and action than you don’t expect from most crankbaits. Remember, a thin lip will cut through water better, dive faster and won’t restrict the bait’s action like a thicker, heavier-lipped crankbait will. If you want a crankbait that will give the bass a different look, color and action, then the Strike Shad is the bait for you.
