Winning with New Lures and Mark Rose

Editor’s Note: One of the reasons Strike King has been so successful, and its pro-fishermen have won so much money is that all the new lures Strike King introduces are field-tested by the pros before they’re released to the market. A classic example is Strike King’s Football Jig with the Rage Tail Rage Craw trailer. Mark Rose of Marion, Arkansas, used this new lure to win $125,000 before the lure ever reached the market. We asked Rose to pick five of Strike King’s newest lures and tell us what he likes about them.

Part 2: Fish Like Coffee, Too

Mark RoseQuestion: What’s another new 2008 lure from Strike King that you like?

Rose: I really like the new Coffee Tube. Strike King has discovered that the bass really like the coffee scent. I guess they’re just like us in many ways because nothing beats a good cup of coffee. This tube also comes in really-good smallmouth colors, and when we fished Lake Champlain and St. Clair, I caught some really-nice smallmouth on the Coffee Tube. Tubes have been around for a long time, but when you can add something new and different to the tube, like new colors and scents, the tube becomes a new bait the bass have never seen before.

The good news is you can change the shape of the tube, depending on the type of lead head you put inside it. When I’m fishing on the flats, I’ll put a 1/16- or a 3/16-size round head inside the tube, if I’m fishing in shallow water about 2- to 4-feet deep. Fishing with Mark RoseWhen I have to fish in deep water, like Lake Erie, and I’m trying to make my tube jig look like a Goby baitfish, I’ll put a 3/8- or a 1/2-ounce Strike King Football Jig inside the Coffee Tube. That Football Jig causes the head of the tube to bulge and look more like a Goby fish that has a slightly enlarged head.

Question: What are your three favorite colors of the Coffee Tube?

Rose: I like watermelon, copper-and-purple, green pumpkin and the new Goby colors that have purple and cream in them. Once again, although the tube has been around for many years, this is the first year for the Coffee Tube. With the new scent, the new colors and the new football-style head, we’ve taken an old lure and made it brand new. And, this bait is deadly effective.
