Strike King Intervenes to Save the Day with Tim Ungaro
Editor’s Note: Tim Ungaro of Collierville, Tennessee, is both a fly-fisherman and a fisherman. Now understanding the difference in the two is important. A fly-fisherman fishes only with a fly-rod, while a fisherman will fish with any type of tackle required to catch a fish. So, sooner or later, there will be a conflict in these two styles of fishing. This is where Strike King intervenes to save the day.
Part 4: The Bass Bonanza
Question: Tell me about another trip that you used the Zulu and caught some fish.
Ungaro: Dr. Maurice Smith, a doctor of neurosurgery in Memphis, Tennessee, is a very-accomplished fly-fisherman and fishes quite a few fly-fishing tournaments all over the country. A couple of years ago, his team won the Grand Slam Series at Key West, Florida, and always places in the fly-fishing tournaments held in the Keys. Mo had just bought a new piece of property that had a lake on it, and when he had a fisheries biologist evaluate his lake, the biologist told Mo his lake was overrun with small bass.
Mo’s just now getting into fishing for bass. He asked me over, and when we started fishing, I began wearing the bass out.
When Mo asked me, “What are you fishing with?” I explained that I was using a Strike King Zulu. Mo said, “Man, I can’t believe that. That’s the lure I used in Key West to fish for tarpon.” I laughed and said, “Yeah, I know the Zulu will catch tarpon. I haven’t found any fish it won’t catch. Just about every fish I’ve cast it to, I’ve been able to catch, no matter the species.”
I was surprised because I didn’t realize that the Zulu was so well-known for catching tarpon as apparently it is. Most of the people I fish with have seen the Zulu work so well so many times on so many species of saltwater and freshwater fish, we’re pretty much convinced that there’s not a fish the Zulu can’t catch.
