James Niggemeyer and Strike King’s New Products
Editor’s Note: James Niggemeyer of Van, Texas, one of the hottest new pros on the professional fishing circuit, won a $100,000 tournament in his first year as a Strike King pro.
Part 3: Take the Red Eye
Question: James, why do you like the Red Eye Shad?
Niggemeyer: I like it because of its wiggle and the swimming action it has when you kill it, and it starts to fall. The body shape of the Red Eye Shad allows me to rip it through the grass a lot better than I can other types of lipless crankbaits. The lipless crankbait is not a new lure.
This design of bait has been around for years. But Strike King redesigned the shape of the bait, giving it a swimming type of action on the fall with more body action and adding new and different colors. So, even though it’s defined as a lipless crankbait, it’s an altogether new lure.
Question: James, where do you like to fish this bait?
Niggemeyer: The Red Eye Shad will catch bass in various places, but my favorite place to fish it is around grass or boathouses.
In the fall, I like to fish it around boathouses where shad and baitfish are holding. I get the most bites on the front or the side of the boathouse.
Question: What pound-test line are you fishing with the Red Eye Shad?
Niggemeyer: For me, the cover I’m fishing around dictates the size and the type of line I’ll use. But I’ll primarily be fishing 15- to 20-pound-test line on a 7-foot All Star Rod with a Pflueger President Reel.
