Denny Brauer - My Favorite Ways to Fish

Denny BrauerEditor’s Note: Denny Brauer has proven his prowess on the professional bass-fishing circuit, and he’s a nationally-known TV host. In any tournament he fishes, he’s a threat to win, and he often wins big. Denny never fishes to place or show; he always fishes to win. And he’s developed techniques to use that have made him one of the best bass fishermen in the nation. This week, let’s look at the tactics, strategies and lures that have aided Brauer’s winning ways and learn why he prefers to fish them.

Part 5: Something Different – The Sexy Spoon

Denny BrauerQuestion: Denny, what’s another or new technique of bass fishing that you’re really using a lot?

Brauer: I started fishing the Sexy Spoon this year. Now the only other spoon that I have fished was a jigging spoon, and I only fished it in the winter months because we didn’t have tournaments that lasted through the summer. But now that we have tournaments throughout the summer, the pros are spending more time fishing structure than they ever have before.

For instance, on Kentucky Lake last summer I could take that Sexy Spoon and fish it on deep-water breaks where I’d normally fish the Anaconda. I would sweep that spoon up from the bottom and let it flutter back down, and the Sexy Spoon would never get to the bottom, because the bass would eat it on the fall. The Sexy Spoon is a totally-different look on lures that the bass have never seen before. Strike King Sexy SpoonWhen that Sexy Spoon starts to flutter down toward the bottom, it appears to be a big shad that’s sick or injured. Those bass have seen plenty of jigs and worms popped-up off the bottom, but in most areas they haven’t seen a big Sexy Spoon.

Now the other advantage to the Sexy Spoon is you can fish it much deeper than you can fish a deep diving crankbait. So the Sexy Spoon gives us another lure and tactic to use on deep-water fish and to catch deep-water fish. I think the Sexy Spoon will be around for a long time, and it’s fast becoming one of my favorite deep-water lures.

Fishing with Denny BrauerQuestion: What kind of equipment do you use to fish a Sexy Spoon?

Brauer: I like to fish it on 15-pound-test fluorocarbon line. Some of the other pros fish the Sexy Spoon on 20- or 25-pound-test line, because they don’t want to break-off their lures. However, I like the lighter line because I think it lets the lure perform better. What’s interesting about the Sexy Spoon is that it’s such a revolutionary bait for summertime bass fishing that we’re just beginning to learn how to fish it. I’m sure there are many more applications for this lure than what I’m currently using it for. So I’m going to be experimenting with the Sexy Spoon even more to learn more ways to fish it better.
