Shaw Grigsby Fishes Salt Water with Strike King Lures

Shaw GrigsbyEditor’s Note: Strike King has secured a strong presence in the freshwater fishing market, but most anglers don’t know that Strike King also produces some of the best saltwater lures on the market today. Because Shaw Grigsby lives in Florida, he has been using many of the Strike King saltwater products to catch a wide variety of saltwater fish. This week, Grigsby will tell us what saltwater lures he’s been fishing, and what fish he’s catching when he fishes in salt water.

Part 3: The Magic Spinner Bait

Shaw GrigsbyQuestion: Shaw, you’ve fished the Redfish Magic, a saltwater spinner bait, haven’t you?

Grigsby: Yes, I have. The Redfish Magic saltwater spinner bait is really the Glass Minnow on a spinner-bait frame. There’s a safety-pin-like harness that sports either a No. 4 or a No. 5 blade. That spinner-bait action is deadly on redfish. Although the bait originally has been designed for catching redfish, I’ve also caught speckled trout, snook and tarpon on it. Many times when you’re fishing for redfish, you’ll be fishing in water that isn’t crystal clear. In that color water, you’ll be able to see the Redfish Magic really do its thing.

I fish the Redfish Magic around points, drop-offs and grass edges. I usually will fish the Redfish Magic on 50-pound-test braided line with baitcasting tackle. I prefer the Quantum Energy PTi-A Spinning Reel in the 6.1:1 gear ratio for fishing this lure. If I hook a 10- to a 20-pound redfish, I’ll need a lot of power in my reel to get that fish to the boat, so I like a little bit slower-retrieve-style reel. I use the Quantum 7-foot, medium- to heavy-action rod.
