Shaw Grigsby Fishes Salt Water with Strike King Lures
Editor’s Note: Strike King has secured a strong presence in the freshwater fishing market, but most anglers don’t know that Strike King also produces some of the best saltwater lures on the market today. Because Shaw Grigsby lives in Florida, he has been using many of the Strike King saltwater products to catch a wide variety of saltwater fish. This week, Grigsby will tell us what saltwater lures he’s been fishing, and what fish he’s catching when he fishes in salt water.
Part 4: The Spot Tail Special Hits the Spot
Question: Shaw, what makes the Spot Tail Special a good lure for you?
Grigsby: This lure came out last year and is basically a Glass Minnow on a keel-weighted hook. Now, in bass fishing, I’ve used the keel-weighted hooks for fishing the Zulu and the new Perfect Plastic Caffeine Shad. In front of the hook, I’ll have a split ring with an inline buzzbait blade. Then I can cast the Spot Tail Special out and reel it in like a buzzbait. I’ve caught some giant speckled trout with this lure. Early in the morning and sometimes all day, speckled trout like top-water lures.
Even when specks aren’t biting right on the surface, many anglers use popping corks with Glass Minnows below the corks to get the trout to move out of deep water and come up and feed near the surface. When I’m fishing the Spot Tail Special, I’ve had big trout come up and just try to destroy this lure. The Spot Tail Special also attracts redfish and snook.
Too, I’ve found that I can catch fish using the Spot Tail Special as a subsurface lure. When I’ve fished this lure like a spinner bait, I’ve caught a number of speckled trout, redfish and snook. But, the Spot Tail Special has been designed to be a top-water lure and fished like a buzzbait. However, I’ve found it to be equally effective when I’ve fished this lure below the surface like a spinner bait. I rig this lure on 50-pound-test braided line and often will use a high-speed reel, especially when I’m fishing it on the surface. You can use this bait just about any time you want to go saltwater fishing for any type of inshore fish.
