Mark Davis’s Dream Lures
Editor’s Note: One of the advantages that Strike King has over many-other lure companies is that Strike King designs the lures that tournament fishermen dream of fishing. When Strike King’s pros identify a bass-fishing problem, the pros work with Strike King’s design team to create that lure. This week, Mark Davis will tell us about some of the new dream lures that Strike King has created, and how and why he’ll be fishing them.
Part 2: You’d Better Get a Bottom Dweller
Question: Mark, why do you like the Bottom Dweller?
Davis: Well, let me see if I can explain it. Strike King has a 3/4-ounce Pro Model spinner bait, and it’s a great spinner bait. But with the Bottom Dweller that Strike King has come out with this year in the 3/4-ounce and 1-ounce sizes we get a lure that’s the ultimate slow-rolling, deep-water spinner bait designed for structure fishing. You know we’ve all decided that when bass are deep, you need to fish a deep-diving crankbait. Well, that’s not true anymore.
Now we can go to those same places we’re fishing with those deep-diving crankbaits and fish the Bottom Dweller, which gives us a spinner bait to back-up our crankbaits. You may be on a really-good bite of big bass on a deep ledge, and when the bass quit biting the crankbait, you may try a jig, a worm or a tube.
But those baits don’t have that fast-moving action of a crankbait. However, if you’ll throw the Bottom Dweller spinner bait out there, now you’ve got a bait with a lot of action, a lot of flash and a lot of wiggle coming through that same school of bass that you’ve been catching with a crankbait.
This lure casts and comes through cover really well. It has tremendous hook-setting power and is available in a bunch of different colors. So, you can match the water and the weather conditions with the color of your spinner bait. Strike King makes the Bottom Dweller in six beautiful colors, and to top it off, I’ve already caught a lot of big bass using this lure. As you know, the Strike King pros have been fishing with the lures that we bring out this year (2010) all of last year (2009).
